I got this to wear to a convention and needed something that would give a solid, true black look and actually hold up through a long day of hot, crowded rooms. On both counts it delivered. The color is a perfect solid black straight out of the container, and it looked even better once I layered black eyeshadow on top for extra depth. Compared to the product photos, the color in real life matched the ad almost exactly, which isn't always the case with this kind of makeup. Application was easy and went on smoothly with no streaking or patchiness. Once it was set, it stayed put through a packed, warm convention hall for the whole event without sliding off or breaking down, which is exactly what I needed for a one-day look. At the end of the night it washed off cleanly with no staining left behind on my skin, which made cleanup a lot less stressful than I expected. The one real issue is transfer. This stuff does not want to stay where you put it. It got on my clothes and on other surfaces, basically anywhere it touched, and no amount of setting powder or setting spray made a difference. If you need something that won't transfer, this isn't it, so plan your outfit and surroundings accordingly. For a single event look where you want deep, accurate black color that applies easily and washes off without staining, this works great. Just go in knowing you'll need to be careful about what it touches once it's on. However, like most cream-style face paints, it can feel a bit heavy if applied too thickly. Removal is simple and doesn’t require scrubbing—basic makeup remover or soap and water works fine. It comes off without staining the skin, which is a big plus especially for kids or quick-use situations. Seriously!?!?!? So annoying! Edit.... after my very rude review they reached out to me to make it right. A company has never done that before and I really appreciated that. They sent me a new set and they are great. I did use a couple of the brushes that weren’t damaged before they sent me new ones and I really enjoyed them, that’s why I was so bummed. I’m very pleased with them and they are in my main brush cup I use for my everyday paintings.
I now use this set every time I paint, whether it be acrylic or watercolor. The variety of brushes included covers just about everything I could potentially need and the quality has held up wonderfully, no stray hairs left behind like so many other brush brands at even higher prices. Cleaning them is so quick and easy but most importantly, brush shape is retained once dry. I also appreciate the texture of the paint coating on the brush handles, not sure what it is but it has something that helps with grip.
Update to my review since it's been a couple weeks worth that I have been using these brushes with acrylic paint. For some brushes the paint has been difficult to remove and some of the hair bristles have loosened. I still like using them although this is my first set and don't have much to compare them with. The majority of them still have kept their bristles intact other than a stained color because of paints.
I have spent so much money on face paint brushes, that I really didn’t think this set would be as good as it is. I really wanted to try a dagger brush and was intrigued by some brush styles I had never seen. (I still can’t figure out what to use the rounded slant brush for ... lol) I was pleasantly surprised at how good these are turning out to be. The small round brushes make lovely Linework and teardrops. The large round makes such wonderful double dip flowers. I love the wisp brushes and the rake (?) brush. I am so happy with these. And of course the slant brush makes such beautiful roses and flowers. I’m using so many of these over my used-to-be favorites. I try to take good care of my brushes, so I’m hoping these are in it for the long run. Customer service is great. Quickly replaced a missing brush from the second set I ordered.
Love these. Super good quality. I bought them for face painting. I might buy another set for painting acrylics on canvas. I love them! Update: Still love over a year later. Buying that 2nd set!
Beautiful brushes that are easy to clean, do not have loose hair, makes precise detail to what you are painting, and the price is incredible. I use them for watercolor paintings and I highly recommend them for this purpose. Good for beginners and professional artists.
This brushes are wonderful. They are soft and work perfectly with face paint. You have all of your basic styles of face paint brushes plus a few that are different and work awesome!
The Blue Squid Pro body paint stick in deep blue has a rich, vibrant color with good opacity. I've used this brand's water based UV-reactive paints before and really liked them, so I wanted to try this version. It has a slight waxy scent, but it's not strong. I first applied it directly from the stick and got good coverage. When I tried using a wet brush, it didn't work well, which made me realize this appears to be oil based. I couldn't find that clearly stated in the product information, and I think it should be. Using a dry brush worked much better and transferred an opaque layer of color. The paint provides good coverage but stays creamy and will need setting powder, as it still smeared after about 30 minutes. Overall, it's a solid product, I just wish the oil based formula was labeled more clearly.
I've been using the Blue Squid PRO Yellow Face Paint Stick for several events, and overall, I'm very impressed with it. The first thing I noticed was the quality of the packaging. My only minor criticism is that it takes a little longer to fully dry than some face paints I've used. If you need maximum longevity or plan on touching your face frequently, setting it with a light dusting of powder can help. It's also best removed with a quality makeup remover rather than just soap and water. Haven’t tried painting with them yet, but I have played with them, felt them, etc. The brushes seem like they’d do just fine for watercolor, love the different brushes (hard to find grainer brushes!), soft bristles and none came bent or anything. Took one star off b/c one brush came off the handle as soon as I pulled it (even gently) out of the little elastic strap, so I’ll have to glue it back on. Not sure if any of the others will then do the same? We’ll see.
*UPDATE* They sent me a new set to replace the ones that were cracking and they are great. Customer service was very helpful and got the replacement out to me quickly. Was very excited and hopeful when I found this set. I just started acrylic painting and this set had most of the brushes I was looking for. Got this set very quickly and painted a couple times with no issues. The bristles are great and don't fall out on my paintings. They are super easy to clean. But after only a couple uses they started cracking and peeling on the handles. I've attached photos of the ones you can see peeling. I'm not happy with this at all. Wish the handles were better made and not peeling because it is sharp and has scratched my hand.
Came defected. They refunded money and let me keep using the brush set, which I appreciate. But the quality is unacceptable. The paint layer on the brush handle peels off after a few brush washes. The tip of the fan brush is missing and uneven. Attached images

Will the colours smudge?
